Men’s Grooming – How to Shave Properly

Shaving is something most men will have to do on a regular basis for
the rest of their lives. For some this is an awful chore. It is a
mess, it takes a long time, your face is covered in cuts and razor
burn. There is really no need to ask a doctor how to shave properly.
All of this can be solved by using proper technique.
1. Wash your face. Pieces of dirt and skin can get caught in the
razor and that can cause irritations.
2. If you have a beard or long hair on your face, soften it before you
shave. Place a warm washcloth on your face for a few seconds. The
softer the hair, the easier it will be to shave it.
3. Apply shaving cream evenly over your face and neck and use a new or
almost new razor.
4. When shaving the area on your face (cheeks) start at the top and
make long strokes down to your jaw.
5. For shaving under your chin, look up and use long strokes from your
neck to your chin.
6. When shaving your upper lip, pull your lip down over your teeth and
shave from your nose down to your lip.
7. After shaving apply aftershave. It is best not to use an alcohol
based aftershave because those tend to dry out the skin and you will
be more likely to cut yourself when your skin is dry.
Remember to use long even strokes. Don’t shave too fast or you are
more likely to hurt yourself. Rinse your razor with hot water after
each stroke. This will keep your razor clean and from getting clogged
up with hair. As you shave always shave with the grain of your hair.
This prevents in-grown hairs and razor burn. If you want a close
shave, pull your skin slightly as you shave. This will help the razor
get better contact with your skin and make for a smoother face when
you are done.
