Big Viking Manliness!

As a teenager, I was of the wiry disposition. Pipe cleaner arms, that was what they used to call em! Not like Doug Hyde , in other words. Doug’s dad was massive, looked just like a Viking, and in Doug had given birth to a hybrid monster who looked like he’d just wandered off the set of 90210. He had huge arms, a six-pack that he flashed at all the girls, and a neck that people called “The Redwood”. I stayed away from him. Until he approached me one day and said “You know how you get guns like this, fool?”

I shrugged and tried to be un-confrontational. It was hard to act and try and breathe, what with Doug’s vicious hand gripping my wind-pipe.

“You do press ups, bitch!”

That day, I learned something: press ups are indeed the way forward for upper body exercise. Much as I hated Doug for his masculinity, he did do a lot of them, and had thus uncovered one of the greatest secrets of mankind! Apart from Xbox, that is.

The thing about press-ups, if you’re not really good at them, is that you need to be consistent. It’s no good just doing ten a day and hoping you’ll get big like Doug’s dad. You need to do at least thirty a day, preferably some at the beginning and end of the day. And it’s amazing how quickly the results will be obvious; I know I sounded just like a complete meat-head then but it’s the truth! Do this routine for a month and tell me it don’t work, man!

Even better, once you do a few chin ups you’ll get better core muscles too. This will enable you to bust out more press ups. Soon enough you’ll be scaring small children half to death!

When I was a small boy, a small, pretty and shouty girl called Debra Stroud mocked me about my body. Now, I’m aware that this isn’t exactly uncommon, but what made this occasion different was the fact that Debra Stroud – the girl all the girls wanted to be and all the boys blah blah – was a very popular pink dress wearing girl who controlled the minds of the children at school. She did this by being irritatingly popular, and so the insult led to me being cast out of the social elite. It hurt quite a lot, I can tell you. I have a feeling that Debra Stroud has grown up to be one of those women who is impressed with chin ups and toned bodies. If you want to appeal to women like Debra then do the following!

1) Palms facing you chin ups: considered the easiest kind of pull up, this exercise works mainly the biceps and, to some extent, the triceps and Latissimus dorsi muscle (in latin: “widest muscle” of the back). Otherwise known as the “lats”.

2) Palms facing away from you pull ups: much more demanding than the former, these ones really do separate the men from the boys. While you may be able to comfortably knock out five or six consecutive palms facing you chin ups, to begin with you will struggle to do one complete one of these. Why? Because this exercise concentrates much of the load and strain on the Latissimus dorsi ONLY. Although you’ll never get big biceps doing this second one, you will build substantial muscle on the back and improve your grappling s/ overall strength significantly, making this one the choice of many athletes who need to stay light but achieve maximum strength.
